Parenting Training Program for Parents with Left-behind Children

CCR CSR’s, Parenting Program aims to help migrant parents know how to communicate with their children effectively when they are working far from home.  A training manual for Trainers has been produced specifically for this program.

The whole program consists of 10 sections, covering a wide range of aspects of parent-child communication.  Each section starts with a story or a dialog that has happened in their daily life, inspiring the migrant parents to think about themselves and the relationships with their children.  A series of activities and exercises then facilitates the parents to find a practical way to deal with their problems and how to communicate with their children.

The complete training will request 3 full days. But, each section could be used alone or in free combination tailored to the needs of trainees. The training manual can also be used with individuals or groups to generate discussions and foster problem-solving.

The 10 Sections are:

Leaving Home Is My Choice helps the migrant parents to clarify that leaving home is their own decision even if they have taken the  decision to help their children get a better life.  A positive attitude and taking responsibility for their decision is the first step towards a good communication between the parents and the children.

Handling Conflicts in Relations explains the importance of relationships and the two golden rules; tolerance and love. It also elaborates the essence of building a harmonious relationship: care, respect, empathy and to understand your own role and responsibilities.

Children Have the Rights to Know reaffirms the rights of the child to be heard and their views to be taken seriously, in accordance with the UN convention on the Rights of the Child. When parents make decisions on matters of vital and of direct concern to their children (relating for example to employment and living far from home) without making these decisions transparent the result may be that children feel neglected and disrespected. In order to make children confident, trustful and grow to  to respect others, parents should share information and listen to what the children have to say. This includes understanding their evolving capacities to be part of decisions.

Respect Ourselves and Each Other reminds parents of the importance of self-respect and respecting others. The section leads them to have a better understanding of themselves and experience the happiness of being respected through two participatory activities.

What Children Expect from their Parents provides information on how children may think and feel at different ages, their evolving capacities and what they expect from their parents.  To understand the needs and expectations of children at different ages is vital to the success of parent-child communication.

Build a Harmonious Family explains the importance of providing a keyood family environment to children and offers several practical ways to initiate such kind of efforts. In addition to emphasizing the important role of parents in the family, it also underlines the importance and function of temporary guardians.

Effective Long Distance Communication provides parents with tips on how to maintain good communication with children from a far distance. Communication skills are also provided in this section.

Understand the Emotion of Your Children helps the parents to learn how to identify and understand how children express their emotions, and how to assist children to manage their emotions positively.
